Joshua's Vineyard Sermons
Proper Prophetic Atmosphere
I. Paul's Prophetic Principles (1 Cor. 14)
- Operate within the body: We all belong, we all need "committed, interdependent relationships"
- Operate where/how God has placed you
- Operate in the way of agape love
- Tongues are good, prophecy is better
- Def of prophecy: something God brings to mind (important but limited)
- Three purposes of prophecy (1 Cor 14:3)
- strengthening (oikodomeow) to build up, edify
- encouragement (parakalesis) John 14:16
- comfort (paramythia)
7. Prophecy properly: one at a time, let others weigh
Clue to success: start at the small group / kinship level
II. Creating An Atmosphere For Prophecy
A. 1st century Church controversy: do we eat that meat!!
Romans 14-15, 1 Corinthians 8-10, Acts 15
B. Acts 15: don't do it! Romans/ 1 Corinthians: don't
judge or condemn each other
C. Romans 14:1 the command to accept each other
proslambanow = to receive warmly
Acts 18:26 -- Priscila & Aquila & Apollos
Acts 28:2 -- the islanders of Malta
D. Romans 15:5-7 is a guideline to prophetic atmosphere
1. We want a spirit of unity
2. We want to follow Jesus Christ
3. We want to glorify God with one voice and heart
4. We follow Christ's example: accept one another
Note Paul's emotional appeal in 2 Corinthians 6:11-13, 7:2
E. Atmospheres that hinder and block growth and change
1. Judgmental, condemnation ( Romans 8:1 )
2. Manipulative ( guilt, anger, love withdrawn )
3. Performance - based
III. WHAT CAN I DO PERSONALLY?
A. Open my heart to others at Joshua's Vineyard
B. Practice Christianity in small systems / groups
